Health Benefits of SUP

Stand up paddle boarding is an increasingly popular water sport which is fun for all the family. It is unsurprising that there is such a growing interest in this sport when it is an enjoyable low impact exercise with many health benefits.

Whether you are a casual paddle boarder or someone who gets out on the water as often as possible, read on to find out ways to make the most of your SUP!

Your balance will benefit

Balance is essential for a lot of sports and this could not be truer for stand-up paddle boarding. It may be daunting and quite tricky at first to get the hang of standing on a SUP in water but with some perseverance (and yes…falling in!) you will gradually be able to build up your balance over time. Not only will this mean you can apply this new skill to other sports and activities, you will strengthen your core helping you to maintain a better posture in general.

Low impact = Long term results

Stand up paddle boarding is a low impact exercise meaning it puts less strain on your ligaments and tendons than higher impact sports. SUP is very useful for rehabilitation if you have experienced an impact injury as it offers a great cardiovascular and muscular workout whilst relieving joint pressure. Over time the benefits of paddle boarding can help you to get back into more taxing sports. Another fantastic thing about a low impact sport is that you are far less likely to sustain an injury.

SUP makes you strong!

It does not take long to feel the overall benefits form paddle boarding, particularly when it comes to your own fitness. When you paddleboard, you are cross training as you are using almost every muscle in the body, simultaneously strengthening your muscles as well as aerobic training. The great thing about SUP is that it can be as intense or as relaxing as you want it to be, but for those looking to push themselves to the limit, that can absolutely be achieved. The cardio workout from SUP helps to burn calories, encourage weight loss and reduces your risk of heart attacks and strokes.

It’s not just about the body…

As you can see, there are many positive impacts on your health from taking up paddle boarding, but these are not limited to the body. The relaxation associated with SUP is a great form of stress release. Stress can have many negative effects on the body but when you are out on the water, paddling in a calm environment, all of your troubles may disappear! Whether you choose to take up yoga or mediation to encourage these feelings of peacefulness is up to you, but it is undeniable that SUP is a benefit for the body AND mind.
