Father and son are canoeing for charity
Father and son duo Ian and Michael Style are tackling a 284-mile canoeing challenge from Bristol to London and then back, to raise money for Breast Cancer Now.
The pair from Taunton, Somerset, have only been canoeing since October last year but are training hard every week to prepare for the two-week marathon starting next month on June 12.
Their training includes loading the canoe with 30 kilos of bricks, replicating the weight of the equipment they will be bringing with them on their journey. The duo will be using single bladed paddles and alternating their positions in their Canadian canoe, so they won’t be using just one side of their bodies.
Mr Styles said: “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but it hasn’t been possible until now. We hope to reach London in five days, but it’s probably going to take nine days returning, due to the currents.”
From the extensive training, they have both lost weight, and built up muscle, but their training has brought them to a few run-ins with swans! Hopefully they won’t meet too many aggressive birds on their 284-mile challenge.
The two have also started plans for more canoe trips in the years to come, hopefully making journeys on all the rivers and canals of the UK. If you want to support their trip to London, you can text CANU66 to 70070 and the amount you’d like to give.
