Connor Baxter wins the Red Bull Heavy Water SUP race

The strong currents, multiple obstacles and unpredictable swells has made the Red Bull Heavy Water event one of the most gruelling races in stand-up paddling.

Taking place in San Francisco, California, the best SUP athletes in the world faced waves reaching 10-plus feet on a course which stretched over seven miles. The course started at Ocean Beach, travelled under the Golden Gate Bridge and finished at the St. Francis Yacht Club.

The heavy conditions took its toll on the racers – of the 15 starters, only 10 managed to complete the entire course, with Connor Baxter coming out on top.

Baxter fought the rough conditions through the surf and topped his performance off with a strong sprint to finish the race in 1 hour, 11 minutes and 32 seconds – putting him top of the podium and granting him the number 1 spot in the World Series standings.

Kai Lenny was second out of the water, finishing in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 15 seconds. Zane Schweitzer took third in a time of 1 hour, 13 minutes and 22 seconds.
