6 Reasons Why You Should Take Up Kayaking

The stressful lives that we live nowadays can take its toll on both our brains and bodies. One way to shut yourself off from this is to spend time in nature, where you can enjoy the beautiful and peaceful surroundings.

Kayaking is a great way of being able to get out into nature and enjoy the serenity, while also enjoying a complete body workout. It can help you to unwind and forget about the troubles of the day.

If you ever wondered ‘why should I start kayaking?’ you’re in luck as we have looked at six reasons why you should take up the activity below:

Allows you to embrace your sense of adventure

After you have learnt the basics of the sport, you can go kayaking in many places, both at home and abroad. It is one of the few sports that lets you enjoy nature without disturbing it and allows you to explore both well-known places, as well as those more remote areas.

There are many locations around the world that are not accessible by land, so if you know how to paddle, you can either rent or buy a kayak and head out to explore beautiful coastlines.

It’s a complete workout

Kayaking is a great full body workout; not only is it great for the mind and soul, but it is also great for burning calories and toning up.

An average hour-long kayaking session burns almost 300 calories, and you can add in some more intense cardio sessions by speed racing in your kayak. As for toning, your core and arms will also benefit from the actions required when paddling, helping you to have a more toned appearance all around.

Kayaking can be rehabilitating

As we said, kayaking can be very relaxing and good for relieving stress, but a study also suggests that it may help people who have suffered intense physical injuries. During a 2008 study at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, spinal cord injury patients were put on a kayak training programme for ten weeks. At the end of it, the patients managed to acquire a strategy for balance control, proving kayaking can aid in functional performance.

It can be a social sport

While we’ve said kayaking is a great way of being alone with nature, there are undoubtedly those of you out there who would rather enjoy the experience with a friend. Bringing along a friend or loved one on a kayaking trip and sharing the experience with them is a great way to bond. For the ultimate experience why not pick up one of our two-seater kayaks for sale and share the paddle with a friend or loved one?

Aside from enhancing your relationships, you can also compete against each other with competitions such as speed races, or simply just paddle along at your leisure.

Kayaking is very often overlooked despite being (in our opinion!) one of the best outdoor activities you can enjoy. As you can see, it has a lot of positive effects on your life and wellbeing, so why not give it a go yourself?

Extended trips

Whether you have a 15-mile day planned or a 5-day extended trip scheduled, covering large distances in a kayak is a unique and fun experience.

It’s good for your mind

Paddlers are always talking about the stress relieving properties of paddling in their kayaks, and it now seems paddling does much more than that.

Recent research published in the Journal of Leisurability suggests that there may be mental and emotional benefits from paddling other than stress relief. The study focused on individuals who had experienced brain injury and then could not participate in all outdoor activity. They were put in a 12-week kayaking programme, and the emotional benefits were staggering.

“Following participation in the kayak program, the group mean score increased to reflect enhanced feelings of self-worth, confidence, physical appearance, feelings of adequacy, and a sense of improved worth in social interactions, as well as the ability to follow through and become physically involved in active recreation,” the study found.

These are just a few of the reasons why you should start paddling a kayak as soon as possible. There’s no excuse not to add a new exciting sport to your lifestyle. Not only is it fun-filled, but as these reasons can attest to, it’s good for not only your body and soul, but your mental well-being as well!
